As Long As the Rivers RunChapter 31The Same Lord Over All |
|
The missionaries were in constant motion in their efforts to proclaim
the name of Jesus. One-on-one evangelism was slow, hard work. But that was the
model of Jesus’ early ministry. And, that’s what the Jackson’s ministry in the
North called for.
They knew the Gospel was for everybody. It wasn’t only for adults.
Certainly, it wasn’t only for women and children. It wasn’t only for Native
people. The same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him (Romans 10:12).
There was a fairsized white population in the area. They also needed the Lord.
“I talked to Sam Woole in his store one day,” Bill reported. “I had heard
that there were special ways to evangelize Jewish people. I didn’t know any
special ways, so I just told the man, like I told everybody else, what the Bible
says.”
He told the Jewish fur trader about Jesus coming to earth to die for our
sins. Just as he told his own people, he told the man that Jesus had changed his
life and forgiven his sins.
“It’s all right for you to believe that,” the man replied. “But I don’t.”
Then, without giving any reason for his refusal to believe, he added something
which strongly suggested he knew something of Christian truth. “I know why you believe that.” He leaned forward to emphasize his point. “There was a little Jew called Paul. He was big on this kind of stuff. He went around spreading it.”
If the Jewish fur trader knew that much, he probably knew that Paul had
once been Saul, a man who hated and persecuted Christians until he met Jesus in
a conversion experience (1 Timothy 1:12,13; Acts 9).
Well, Bill was big on this kind of stuff, too. He did his best to persuade
the Jewish fur trader—and almost everybody else who came within his area of
influence. Although the Jackson’s ministry was generally seed sowing for future harvest, there were times when God encouraged them. Elsie is an example. She was a teenager who lived in Buffalo Lake. Elsie attended the meetings which the Jacksons held in homes on that Metis Settlement. She also attended Bible camp. A slightly-built attractive young teenager, Elsie had a quick friendly smile and a readiness to talk about spiritual things. One evening, after the meeting, Bill spoke to her about the message that had just been presented. As the conversation went on, the Holy Spirit gave Elsie the courage to admit that she needed and desired the Lord Jesus Christ to be her Savior. She did not accept the Lord that night, but continued to have a keen interest in spiritual things. Sometime later Elsie did accept Christ, and attended Bible School. She is still known to bear a consistent Christian testimony. |
